Bloomington, Indiana became a settlement in 1816... President James Monroes elected Bloomington for a seminary. Monroe County Indiana was created by an Act of the Indiana General Assembly in 1818. Historical information is maintained at The Monroe County Historical Society Museum. Bloomington Indiana is home to Indiana University (originally Indiana Seminary) which adds 35,000 students to the community each September, and provides major college sports, entertainment and cultural activities to residents of Bloomington and Monroe County. The limestone industry is the oldest and one of the largest industries in southern Indiana Building-stone quarries and mills in the Bloomington-Bedford limestone belt are some of the largest in the world. Monroe County is located in the heartland of the United States, easily accessed by road and rail. The Monroe County Airport is four miles west of downtown Bloomington with daily flights to Chicago by Direct Air. Many corporate flight departments operate from the airport including Cook Group, Huse Food Group, Rogers Group and IU Foundation.
